Something unexpected always happens when you bring together celebrities for an award show. Some are modest enough to enjoy the show regardless of winning their nominations while others are in it to win it. Kanye West’s outburst during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video is old news by now in today’s world of Web 2.0. The news cycle is so fast now that Kanye already apologized not once, not twice, but THREE times.
The latest apology came last night on Jay Leno’s first night back, serendipitis for his own ratings, and emotionally provoked by Leno.
What surprised me was finding out about the incident hours after the show ended. I was beside the red carpet in the press arrivals area at Radio City Music Hall on assignment for the Daily Collegian and unfortunately missed the show.
I saw Kanye arrive on the red carpet, fashionably late at around 8:45 with a bottle of Hennessy in hand. He and his posse decidedly walked right by the majority of the press.
I feel cheated by his phony apologies. He was drunk! Serena Williams and Joe Wilson were probably not drunk, though who knows, but Kanye should come “clean” for what exactly fueled his behavior. That would be respectable in a culture in which everybody drinks.
